So here we are again, it’s time to talk food.
(Celebrates with a little shimmy)
I get so much joy from writing these posts, so when the opportunity arose for me to review Bills restaurant in Cambridge, I absolutely jumped at the chance.
Back in 2017 we tried Bills for the first time on a little breakfast outing (FYI their pancakes are top notch) and I remember getting a quick glance of the lunch menu and almost drooling at the sound of their buttermilk burger.
So this time, we decided to give their lunch our best go.
We arrived at Bills and were so warmly welcomed by the lovely staff. Our waiter Poppie came over to introduce herself and I was relieved when she mentioned she would happily advise us on what the best choices were.
I’m unbelievably indecisive when it comes to food, so when I saw the incredible sounding options on the menu I knew I was in for trouble.
What’s so fab about Bills is that it’s unique style is recognisable anywhere. The quirky pieces of furniture they have around the restaurant and their own produce hanging from the rustic looking ceiling creates an absolute treat for your eyes, all before you’ve even seen any of the food.
The restaurant is cosy and atmospheric and everywhere you look you get a little glimpse into the heart of Bills.
Although the restaurant is situated in the bustling city centre, it’s perfectly placed down one of the cute cobbled streets of Cambridge amongst boutique shops. An ideal spot for a sightseeing break.
We started off soft with the drinks, a flat white and a pink lemonade; both absolutely delicious. Their lemonade is beautifully branded and tastes so lovely and fresh.
Afterwards, we moved onto a couple of cocktails because just as our lovely waiter Poppie pointed out, it’s five o’clock somewhere!
I’m a huge Mojito fan, so was very excited to see there was a Bramble Mojito on the menu. It was delicious and sweet and the perfect afternoon treat.
Right, here comes the best part and the thing i’m of course most excited about.
Here’s what we went for to start:
CRUMBED HALLOUMI STICKS – with garlic and lemon mayo
MINI CUMBERLAND SAUSAGES – Glazed with honey and grain mustard
GIANT GREEN GORDAL OLIVES
I have to tell you, and i’m absolutely not exaggerating when I say this but the Halloumi sticks were genuinely one of the best things i’ve ever eaten.
They were perfectly cooked sticks of Haloumi covered in delicious breadcrumbs that just melted in your mouth. AND they came with garlic mayo which we all know is just the sauce of heaven.
I’m already craving them again…
The starters got us very excited about what was to come for mains, here’s what we decided on:
FISH FINGER SANDWICH – in toasted bloomer with tartare sauce, rocket, ketchup and fries
BILL’S HAMBURGER – with lettuce, tomato, red onion, secret sauce, sesame bun and fries (plus Cheddar cheese and smoked streaky bacon)
I’m so glad I went for the fishfinger sandwich, it’s not something I would usually go for but when I presented Poppie with the three options I was deliberating between, she pointed me in the right direction.
The fishfingers were so tasty and soft and the sandwich had the absolute perfect ratio of sauce to filling.
The burger was a huge stack of goodness and was composed wonderfully. Chipotle sauce is one of our favourites and it complemented the burger very well.
After this you can imagine how full we were, but after one glance at the dessert menu we knew we had to give it a try.
Here’s what we went for:
WARM MINI CINNAMON DOUGHNUTS – with fresh strawberries and warm chocolate and salted caramel dipping sauces
MELTING CHOCOLATE BOMBE – Chocolate dome, brownie chunks, chocolate sauce, vanilla and chocolate ice cream, honeycomb and hot salted caramel sauce
THEY WERE UNBELIEVABLY GOOD.
The donuts were hot, soft and sugary and when drizzled with the chocolate and salted caramel dripping sauce were just a taste sensation.
The chocolate bombe was a thing of beauty and no matter where you dug your spoon in you were left with a chocolatey combination of perfection.
I really was so impressed with the food at Bills, and I already cannot wait to return to try some more off the menu.
If you’re looking for a cosy Cambridge food spot to stuff your face I highly recommend you give Bills a try, even if it’s just for the halloumi sticks.
P.S Just for your information, the wonderful people at Bills Cambridge invited me to enjoy this experience in exchange for a blog review, however everything you read on my blog comes from the heart, and I would never promote anything I didn’t truly recommend.
