You know what I love about Instagram? The fact that just when I think the platform can’t get any better, they release something brand new and my mind is blown.
I know Instagram has its downfalls, the algorithm, and the follow-unfollowers to name just a few, but all in all I think it’s a bloody fantastic platform.
If you haven’t heard already (you must have been living under a rock, or avoiding social media in which case well done to you) Instagram have just launched Instagram TV.
Like with any big new update, no one can really predict where it’s going to go, but there are a few things we do already know about IGTV.
Here are some basics:

Surprisingly, i’ve seen a lot of scepticism around IGTV so far.
I ran a poll on my Instagram account to find out what people thought about IGTV, and I was totally expecting more people to be on board with it.
But let’s think back to when Instagram stories came out. Instantly people were wary of the update wondering whether anyone would actually use it, but look what’s happened now.
Instagram stories now has over 250 million users, and it’s one of the platforms most loved features.
So maybe it’s not so surprising that people are sceptical. Once we start getting to grips with IGTV I honestly think we’ll all be wondering how we survived without it, just like with stories.
I think IGTV is the perfect gap between stories and YouTube.
I’ve often thought about vlogging and creating video content, but the idea of starting from scratch with YouTube is such a huge thing – it’s off putting!
In a way IGTV allows us to test the waters with video content. It’s still bitesize, but a step up from stories.
One of my favourite bloggers Laura Bradshaw uploaded the cutest little hair tutorial, which I think is perfect for IGTV.
There are endless possibilities with IGTV, but here are some of the things I think we’ll start to see from influencers:
And I think it’s going to be amazing!
I already love watching Instagram stories, so the fact we can now see even more from our favourite accounts is going to be so much fun.
This new update does lead to questions about stories. Will people use stories less, and will it really be that different?
In my opinion, stories aren’t going anywhere. We all love them too much, and it’s 100% embedded into our Instagram routine.
How I see it is that stories are more of a day to day update space, whereas IGTV is for highlights and longer snippets. Once people get over the initial excitement of uploading anything and everything, cats dancing, dogs singing etc, I think it will be used more to show highlights.
Let’s say an influencer has been on a holiday to Paris, you know, as they do, stories allows them to give us live updates, whereas IGTV can be used to highlight the best bits of the trip at the end.
I think it’s going to be a little more thought out than stories, but at the same time less edited and filtered than YouTube…if that makes any sense at all!?
Personally, I can’t wait to start using it. I’m so excited to dip my toe into the video creation pond and try my hand at editing…watch this space!
