In my usual blog writing fashion I’ve written a first sentence, read it back, and deleted it at least four times now. The truth is it’s hard to find the words to describe what’s going on in the world right now, so I think with that considered I’m not even going to try. I’m just going to launch straight into this post.
It’s always been so important to me that my social channels, Instagram in particular, are places of positivity. And I’d like to keep it that way as much as possible, despite the current climate.
Instead of focussing on the negatives in this situation and creating more talk around the virus and it’s implications, I want to share positive content. Content to make people smile, inform people about helpful or good news, bring normality, and lift my own and others spirits.
This is an incredibly difficult time for all, but especially terrifying for small, independent businesses. Over the past few days I’ve seen businesses share updates on how they’re supporting their communities and I want to do as much as I can to support them as well.
So, below you’ll find a list of some wonderful independent foodie businesses around Cambridge who are still open, offering additional services, and who I’m sure would appreciate some extra support themselves right now. Plus you’re likely to get something very tasty!
You’ll know if you follow me on Instagram I’m a huge Stir lover. Their breakfasts are delicious and their banana bread…incredible. Plus if you’re looking for a caffeine boost it’s the perfect place to grab your favourite pick-me-up.
“Cafe opening hours update:
Monday to Friday: 9 am to 3pm
Saturday 9am to 4pm
Sunday 9am to 3pm
@stirbakerycambridge hours remain the same, although we will close early if all bread and cakes are sold out. That will give our bakers time to rest and regroup for another night of filling the ovens and baskets.
📞 Take away: Please call ahead to place an order and we will leave your items outside if preferred 📦”
Stir are also offering a fantastic service for vulnerable people and those avoiding crowds, so please spread the word if you know someone who may find this of use.
In the village I grew up in, Shelford Delicatessen are shifting from their usual cafe style service to provide delicious takeaway items. A brilliant choice if you’re looking for something a little healthier like a salad, some soup, or even just some drinks.
“We are open tonight and every night til 8.30pm!
Phone your order thru and we’ll have it ready for timed collection.
Hot artisan pizzas to takeaway, salads, soups + drinks / Shop goodies also available! Cheese, coffee, pasta, sauces – call us to ask!

In times like these, a nice glass of your favourite wine is surely always appreciated. I know I’ve been thinking a lot about Prosecco…the guys at Noel Young Wines are here to save the day.

Pub/ Cafe The Waterman is still open for business but the team are preparing to offer the opportunity for delivery. They’re making changes to their menu and enabling delivery without contact – as they say, in spy style.
Keep eyes on their feed for an updated takeaway menu, if they’re providing any of their breakfast items I know I’ll be first in line.
“Our new opening times are 8am – 3pm Monday – Sunday

As you’ve probably noticed, it’s proving much harder to grab the food and drink bits you need from supermarkets at the moment. The Gog Farm Shop is continuing to offer fabulous fresh foods to fill your cupboards with.
The cafe (see above for deliciousness), is also offering a takeaway service as well as outdoor seating for some fresh air relief. Looks like delivery is also coming soon…
“Do you need to do a food shop & not quite sure where to go?
The @the_gog_ farm shop is currently stocked with fabulous food & the cafe is open for #takeaway only (following the new government guidelines). There is outdoor seating and The Shack has cover no matter the weather… #Delivery & #Collection service coming soon…🙌”
I could honestly go on and on with this list, as I’ve been writing it up I’ve stumbled upon so many local businesses providing flexible services and support to local Cambridge communities. It really is wonderful to see.
Above are just some of my favourites, but there really are so many more. Check out the below links which will give you further information.
Finally, if you’re a small business local to Cambridge and you’d like to spread the word about your updated services, or let people know you’re still open, then please take a look at the below list created by the wonderful Chloe from The Creative Strides. Tag any of the Cambridge accounts in your posts and stories and we’ll share them as much as we can.
A little additional exposure can go a long way to reaching someone who may not know what’s available.
Stay safe and comfortable during this strange, strange time, and most of all, let’s stick together.
